Depletion effect in a model lyotropic liquid crystal-theory

چکیده
The effect of added non-adsorbing polymer on the isotropic-nematic phase transition in a model lyotropic liquid crystal a suspension of hard rods is studied theoretically. The results indicate that the transition is widened and that polymer is partitioned preferentially into the more dilute isotropic phase. The concentration of polymer where a noticeable effect on the transition starts to occur is predicted to be of the order 5 9b of the colt overlap threshold c*, A recent paper Ii introduced a new method for calculating the effects of depletion flocculation

Dynamics of tilted hexatic phases in liquid-crystal films
We develop a theory for the dynamics of tilted hexatic phases in liquid-crystal films. A renormalization-group analysis gives exponents for the softening of the optical-mode relaxation rate near the hexatic-to-hexatic transitions. These exponents may be observable in experiments on therrnotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals.
متن کاملGel-Sol Transition and Thermotropic Behavior of a Chitosan Derivative in Lyotropic Solution
A chitosan derivative which has a structure that approximates N-phthaloyl-3,6-di-Oacetylchitosan (AcPhCh) was used to investigate the thermal behavior of lyotropic gel liquid crystalline phases in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). A distinct gel-sol transition in addition to a liquid crystal-liquid (or chiral nematic-isotropic) transition was observed in the AcPhCh-DMSO system by differential scanning ...
متن کاملLyotropic Ferronematic Liquid Crystals Based on New Ni, Cu and Zn Ionic Magnetic Fluids
The properties of lyotropic ferronematic liquid crystals based on new Ni, Cu and Zn ionic magnetic uids are discussed. The eÆciency of these new ferro uids in the lyotropic nematic liquid crystal doping is veri ed and compared with the conventional surfacted ferro uid lyotropic doping. It was observed that the structural characteristics of the lyotropics and ferro uids determine the good format...

A room temperature reduction-hydrolysis of Fe(III) precursors such as FeCl₃ or Fe(acac)₃ in various lyotropic liquid crystal phases (lamellar, hexagonal columnar, or micellar) formed by a range of ionic or neutral surfactants in H₂O is shown to be an effective and mild approach for the preparation of iron oxide (IO) nanomaterials with several morphologies (shapes and dimensions), such as extend...
متن کاملAntipersistent behavior of defects in a lyotropic liquid crystal during annihilation.
We report on the dynamical behavior of defects of strength s=±1/2 in a lyotropic liquid crystal during the annihilation process. By following their positions using time-resolved polarizing microscopy technique, we present statistically significant evidence that the relative velocity between defect pairs is Gaussian distributed, antipersistent, and long-range correlated. We further show that sim...
